Jewels and Sparkles

Everyone likes something a little pretty for Christmas and when you have a lot of girly friends and not so much money it can be hard to give them all that bit of sparkle. So I have devised a way to give all my friends a little sparkle.

I purchased some silver plated studs and ring blanks from online, and raided my button box and my stash of small semi-precious stones. Then I warmed up my glue gun and got to sticking! They are so easy but everyone loves a handmade gift, well I do especially!

Autumn Notebooks

Autumn is my most favourite time of the year. We can pull all those chunky knits, thick socks, boots and snugly coats out of the wardrobe and start preparing to hibernate over the chilly months. Today I went for a walk with my big scarf on (Yes I know it's warmer today than it has been, but I don't care!) and collected some leaves and acorns and things associated with Autumn.

I have decided that I want to document this coming autumn, keeping my leaves and essentially making an art journal of things that I find. I have many note books in my flat and most are very plain, but I love notebooks that are close-able so I have decided (as I have been banned from buying anymore) that I will adapt some ones that I already have.

You will need:
* Notebooks with firm but not too firm covers (you need to get a needle through there, but not flimsy enough for it to rip easily)
* Needle and Thread
* A button
* String or leather or whatever binding materials you would like.

How to do it:
1. Sew the button onto the notebook, not too close to the edge but wherever you want really.

2. Tie the string around the button into a knot and then wrap it around the notebook and back around the button to fasten.

You are done, simple!

Bracelets

I like a small make, I think you may have realised that, mostly due to the fact that I love the end result and if its a big make it takes a lot longer to get to that end result. This morning, in half an hour, I put together 3 bracelets. I used some seed beads and some small silver plated beads that I purchased at my local haberdashery (that place should give me some shares soon) and some linen thread which I have used previously.

It is simple really, just put the beads onto the thread with various knots, little charms and patterns along the way. Easy, and you can make them exactly how you want them to be.

Check mine out. I love the greens and the natural colours. :)

Friendship

There is often a certain special someone who shows you great friendship in life and in my eyes they should be rewarded! I love showing people how much they mean to me and if I cannot make something myself I will always find something special for them. This time I purchased a glass Friendship ball. These balls are traditionally used up at the end of a glass blowers shift to use up the glass in the bottom of the furnace and date back to the 12th Century. They are made up of all different coloured glasses and some are absolutely stunning. They look great hanging in a window full of light, or in front of a lamp. Beautiful. This one I purchased was one of the nicest that I have seen.

A Day Out and a Quick Make

This weekend was so glorious and sunshiney! It was beautiful. So I had to take advantage so me and my man went for a walk along the canals in Birmingham and for lunch at a lovely Italian restaurant. It was lovely, and I only burnt a little...

I love taking a walk along the canals in Birmingham, there is so much character and history around there and the atmosphere is great.

I even treated myself to a scrummy raspberry meringue which didn't last very long.

I also made myself a little bracelet using lots of natural fibres. I love all the friendship bracelets that you can get around in the summer. But why spend £8 when you can make many for a lot less!

So I raided my stash and found five different colours of linen threads, red, orange, cream, brown and black.

To be honest you can use whatever threads to make your bracelets. My bracelet is only thin because I used these thin linen threads. I would also recommend embroidery threads. That is what most friendship bracelets are made with. I measured out 50cm of each thread twice. So in total I had 10 strands. But you could have as many colours as you fancy just make sure you do two strands of each!

Tie a knot at the top leaving enough threads at the end to be able to tie your bracelet. Then using a safety pin I pinned the threads to a cushion and spread them out, the two blacks in the centre, brown either side then cream, orange and reds on the outside.

To make the bracelet take the left red strand and move into the centre between the two blacks. Do the same with the red strand on the right side and move it over the top of the red strand in the centre, repeat with the orange strands and carry on going until you reach the desired length.

When you get to your desired length tie a knot and tie your two ends together around your or a friends wrist or ankle. I love the chevron effect and so easy with no knots or fussiness. Easy!

Butterfly

I have been super busy in my outside blog life lately, so much so I have not had time to spend time with a needle or a hook! So tonight I decided to sit down for ten minutes and design a pattern to brighten someones day.

One of the people closest to me loves butterflies, and when you know how to crochet something, you can make hundreds of them! So I can now fill their life with butterflies.

What you need:
* Some beautiful yarn
* Crochet hook to match the yarn size
* Scissors

How to make a butterfly:
1. Make your slip knot, chain 4 and slip stitch together. (a magic circle works well with this piece too, depends on how you like to start off your crochet rounds)

2. Ch 5, triple treble, double treble, treble, half treble, sl st then ... ch 2, treble, double treble, half treble, sl st then... ch 2, double treble, treble, half treble, sl st then... ch 2, treble, double treble, triple treble, ch 5 , sl st. Then tie off and tie the two lose ends together (these form the antennae).

You are done! 

I think these would look great dip dyed with an ombre effect! Beautiful :)

Wedding Presents

Today one of my oldest friends has got married to a really lovely lady. He was always a really lovely guy to me and I have very fond memories of him in my life. So I didn't want to get the usual toaster or vouchers so I decided on something a little more special. Something that I could make to bring lovely memories in the future. So here they are...

I made two of these knitted dolls and just made up patterns to make their clothes. Hopefully they will stay apart of their family forever more!

I wish them every bit of luck for the future in everything that they do!!

Knitted Doll

Say "Hello" to my little knitted friend! Her name is Sarah. I am making her for a special little project that I am really excited about :)
I want to share the pattern with you because everyone should have a little knitted person in their lives! It would be a great gift for a little girl, for her to practise making clothes! Getting a bit carried away probably with my dreams!
Sarah (using 3.25mm needles) comes up at around 22cm tall and 24cm from fingers to fingers.

So what do you need to make one of these lovely ladies?
* Yarn (I used Sirdar's Country Style wool blend DK in shade Palest Pink 0391) - you need less than one ball
* Needles - 3.25mm in this case but obviously the bigger the yarn the bigger the doll
* Stuffing
* Sewing needle

Cast on 16 stitches.

When you have finished all your pieces, trim and weave in all loose ends, press and block to the correct size. I sewed all my pieces inside out and turned the right way around before stuffing them, then sewed up the open side and stitched all the pieces together. Head onto body, arms and legs onto body. Then all she needs is a face. Sometimes this can be easier to do before you sew the two head pieces together, but it depends on the detail of the face.

I have used this pattern before to make a memory for a friend from her wedding day and made a little knitted and crocheted couple. It took some work but it was well worth it!

One year on

I can't believe that it has been over a year since I started doing this blog. I started it as a reason for doing all the little bits a pieces that I do. But there was another reason too; to gain confidence. This past year has been a tough one for me, and as silly as it sounds, my craft has done a good job at keeping me going, and so has this blog. I have decided to keep going and through doing it, test myself to do things that I wouldn't normally do. I love One sheepish girls blogging for confidence series and I am taking it as inspiration. This next year I am going to challenge myself to as many new things as I can that I wouldn't normally do. I have sort of being doing this so far this year, I gave a crochet lesson in public. I found that lots of people came and asked what we were doing and genuinely seemed interested in it. The cafe we were in even said they should start up a knitting/crochet knit and natter night. I improved my baking skills, tried new things. Became the soup dragon and perfected my soup making abilities. Tried lots of new crafting skills including embroidery, and started a big project (no it's not finished yet) with my crochet skills. I thank you all for continuing to read my blog, and hope that you carry on. :)

Valentines love..

One of the most important people in my life has had their heart badly broken in this past year. So with Valentines day coming up this week, I decided to give her lots of love to hang up for all to see! :)

I decided on a pallet of whites and greys because the wall it is going on is soon to be a gorgeous teal colour and I figured they would stand out more. Then I took my heart pattern and went to town! I used four different yarns in four different sizes to add something more to it.

To join them together I crocheted a really long chain. I was planning on french knitting a long chain but I had made more hearts than I had planned and that would have taken me forever!

Bringing me a Little Joy

Do you ever wish that you could own something just a little different than anyone else? Jewellery is something that I love, and always have, but I'm not one of those girls who thinks 'the bigger the better', in fact I say less is more. But what I do love is a handmade piece, because you know it's completely original!

And I have found the most wonderful little lady who brings great joy to me every time I open one of her packages. Her name is Little Joy and she makes bespoke jewellery and objects from a little workshop by the sea on the Isle of Wight;  her beautiful creations are made to bring you a 'little bit of joy in your lives!'.

Lauren Griffiths is the lady behind Little Joy. She manipulates silver, natural materials, ceramics and fabrics into fabulous jewellery pieces. She has a beautiful range of products on etsy, as well as commissioning jewellery and objects at great prices, from as little as £18, with more intricate handmade pieces costing in the region of £120 - £600. No commission is too hard, I should know, I have asked for some strange things to date. The process starts with a chat between Lauren and the client, then she draws up some images before starting on the piece itself. But she makes sure you are happy at every stage.

I'm not telling you all this because she gives me free stuff, I wish she did! But I am telling you because this little lady is genuinely amazing at what she does and deserves to get both her name and her beautiful pieces out there into the world!

Little Details

Wrapping up a gift is very important to me. I love receiving a really well packaged present, and I always put as much thought into wrapping my present as buying the gift inside. Special little details are important to me, even if they only last a few moments until the paper is yanked off! Here are a couple of little details that I have added to my gifts this year, as well as the pom pom gift wrap from an earlier post.

Magic Wand
I have decided to give all my girlies a little magic and make them a wand! It was literally a 30 second make using two 30cm pipe cleaners. I made a zig zag with 4 points at the top, 5 at the bottom and the each end being slightly longer than the zig zags in between. I bent it round for the two points to meet and there is your star. Twist the two ends together and then using the second pipe cleaner wrap it around the twisted ends and there you go. Wrap it around any ribbon or ties that you have on your gift and it adds a 3D element that's a bit special.

Gift tags are something that I have always made myself. I don't understand people who get upset because they can't find a gift tag in the shops that matches their paper. Make your own people!! I just got a large piece of card, took my Christmas stamp set and got a bit stamp happy... Then I cut them out into tag shapes and voila! Done! :)
